Creative Europe program is set for 2021-27

The Creative Europe program is set for 2021-27. The respective negotiations between Parliament, Council and Commission have been successfully concluded today. The program will have a significantly higher budget in the future. Instead of 1.4 billion euros, the program is now funded with 2.4 billion euros. The increase was pushed through by the European Parliament.

Creative Europe is the most important instrument of EU cultural funding. The program’s funds can be used, for example, for the cross-border exchange of European artists and the translation of literature or film. The program also supports the European Capitals of Culture, the European Heritage Days and various Europe-wide prizes in the field of culture.

Niklas Nienass, MEP (The Greens/EFA) and member of the European Parliament’s Committee on Culture and Education:

„Creative Europe makes it possible for a small Italian band to play concerts in Helsinki. Or a Romanian indie film to be shown with subtitles at a Portuguese film festival. The fact that we are increasing the budget for such projects is an immensely important step. Especially now, when the cultural sector in Europe is largely shut down by the Corona pandemic. Especially now, when right-wing populists all over Europe are propagating the re-nationalization of culture. Creative Europe is a cultural circulation machine for Europe and we will properly start up this machine again after the pandemic is over!“

At the same time Niklas Nienass criticizes the fact that the European cultural and creative sector was kept in limbo for far too long by the blockade in the budget negotiations – in the midst of a crisis situation of historic proportions. To avoid such cases in the future, the runtime of essential programs such as Creative Europeshould be decoupled from the runtime of the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) in the future.
